Tale
A Chinese woman lives quietly for herself, celebrating the blossoming Belle Epoque with song and dance. A meditation on love and the passing of time, a woman searches for her lost lover in the rubble of a destroyed city and her own shattered memories. The Three Gorges Dam swallows cities whole, just as time swallows people. Women sing and dance in joy and pain, and dreams appear and disappear. Lives change, and we often don’t notice. Using mostly B-roll footage and outtakes from previous films, Zhang-ke spins an intellectual and imaginative story. While I wish the material was all new and put together with a more coherent story in mind, I can’t deny that Zhang-ke brings a magical and fascinating touch to everything he does, even his wanderings. Seen at the Toronto International Film Festival.
